Curved Treadmills- Advantages and Recommendations

Curved treadmills are becoming more and more popular in today’s home gyms. Here’s why.

A more realistic run

Curved treadmills feature, you guessed it, a curved surface design with no motor, which mainly is just in place to help propel the belt on traditional treadmills. This means that on curved treadmills, the user is in charge of driving the belt (and in turn, the speed) by just adjusting their body position and center of gravity on the running surface. If you are running outside and want to go faster, what do you do? You simply take faster steps, longer strides, etc.. Similar concept.

The new Hammer Strength HD Tread is popular in health clubs and studios due to its premium quality and brand reputation.

Greater muscle activity

The curved treadmill surface design also forces the user to run more on the balls of their feet, much like being outside, which results in greater muscle activity and calorie expenditure. Since you’re able to run faster, on command sprints, you’re also able to get more of the benefits of true high intensity interval training.

Easier to place in your room. Smaller footprint, with no complex electrical set-ups

Certain curved treadmills, like the Hammer Strength HD Tread, don’t even need a power source (the console is simple, intuitive, and battery powered). No complex electrical set-ups, dedicated circuits, or unique wall outlets required. Also, usually these machines will be around 6 feet in length, which is smaller than most traditional treadmills. And by not having to place the machine near an outlet, you have more freedom and flexibility when it comes to the equipment layout in your room.

Less maintenance

Unique design features such as a flexi-slat running surface (composed of either rubber or wooden slats) provide for a relatively maintenance-free machine. Aside from regular dusting of all surfaces, there is typically no belt-tightening, oiling or greasing of parts necessary.

Cool workout and design features

The Cascade Ultra Runner Plus and the TKO Air Raid Runner have the option to add magnetic resistance levels to your run for higher intensity interval training. Upper and lower handlebar positions built-in to the frame help accommodate different user sizes and facilitate different exercises, like sled conditioning. Or even pick from a handful of wood frame colors (on the Sprintbok NORHD) for a beautiful looking curved treadmill.
